Psalm as a Prayer of One Who Is Addicted
(Taken from Psalm 69 in the NRSV)

Psalm 69 is not presented in the Bible as the prayer of a person who is addicted. I have edited the psalm, not by changing words, but by omitting parts, as you can easily see if you compare what is printed here with the full text of the psalm. I came upon this psalm while looking for a call to worship for Sunday, November 11, 2001, which was designated on our program calendar as the start of “Addiction Awareness Week.” The words that struck me were, “For the LORD hears the needy, and does not despise his own that are in bonds.”

Save me, O God,

for the waters have come up to my neck.
I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold.
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood sweeps over me.
I am weary with my crying;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.

O God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done
are not hidden from you.

Do not let those who hope in you
be put to shame because of me,
O Lord GOD of hosts;
do not let those who seek you
be dishonored because of me,
O God of Israel.

I have become a stranger to my kindred,
an alien to my mother’s children.

But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD.
At an acceptable time, O God,
in your steadfast love, answer me.
With your faithful help rescue me
from sinking in the mire;
let me be delivered from my enemies
and from the deep waters.
Do not let the flood sweep over me,
or the deep swallow me up,
or the Pit close its mouth over me.

Answer me, O LORD,
for your steadfast love is good;
according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
Do not hide your face from your servant,
for I am in distress —
make haste to answer me.
Draw near to me, redeem me,
set me free because of my enemies.

You know the insults I receive,
and my shame and dishonor;
my foes are all known to you.
Insults have broken my heart,
so that I am in despair.
I looked for pity, but there was none;
and for comforters, but I found none.

But I am lowly and in pain;
let your salvation, O God, protect me.

I will praise the name of God with a song;
I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

Let the oppressed see it and be glad;
you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
For the LORD hears the needy,
and does not despise his own
that are in bonds.

AMEN

Psalm for Someone Suffering from Domestic Violence

Psalm 55 is not “about” domestic violence as such but might speak to and for a victim of such violence or other abuse. The nature of the biblical psalms invites us to bring our own experiences and emotions to them and allow a psalm to give voice to our fears and desires and to raise that voice to God.

Psalm 55:1-6,16-21 (New Revised Standard Version, boldface emphasis added)

Give ear to my prayer, O God;
do not hide yourself from my supplication.
Attend to me, and answer me;
I am troubled in my complaint.
I am distraught by the noise of the enemy,
because of the clamor of the wicked.
For they bring trouble upon me,
and in anger they cherish enmity against me.

My heart is in anguish within me,
the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fear and trembling come upon me,
and horror overwhelms me.
And I say, “O that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest;
truly, I would flee far away;
I would lodge in the wilderness;

I would hurry to find a shelter for myself
from the raging wind and tempest.”

But I call upon God,
and the LORD will save me.
Evening and morning and at noon
I utter my complaint and moan,
and he will hear my voice.
He will redeem me unharmed
from the battle that I wage,
for many are arrayed against me.
God, who is enthroned from of old,
will hear, and will humble them—
because they do not change,
and do not fear God.

My companion laid hands on a friend
and violated a covenant with me

with speech smoother than butter,
but with a heart set on war;
with words that were softer than oil,
but in fact were drawn swords.
